Sean, this is a really great post. If you’re interested, I’d really like to hear your thoughts on our business. Part of our model at English Edits is partnering with non-native English translators who translate documents, and then editors at English edits smooth it over to make it sound like “native English.” For us, and the translators we partner with, it seems like a win-win — they can guarantee to their clients that the final document will sound “native” without losing any context from the source document. However, after reading this post, I wonder if by doing this (and ‘conforming’), we’re also — in some small way — enabling native-speaker bias to continue, which is definitely not our goal. If you have any thoughts or perspective on this, we would really appreciate it!

For all translators I want to suggest a translation tool that works both on Mac and Windows, as it is an online-based tool. It’s http://poeditor.com/ and it’s very effective for translating apps or themes.

Nina, thank you for this very moving article. I do not know if your quest took you to Paris where the Russian “white” emigration was very important as you know. “Ouchtomski” would also be the French transliteration of your grandfather’s name. Nina Berberova might even have provided some information through her memoirs about those years. What a quest you embarked on! Is this research part of the book you mention (Russian San Francisco)? We need more researchers like you about those dark years in Russia, even more so now…sadly.
